Jerzy Szuman has provided this translation of the Polish side of the first page of text in the Margonin Catholic church book for April 1807:
"For knowledge of our descendants I am writing these words, that during the war against the King of Prussia by the French Emperor Napoleon the First in 1806, after the defeat of the Prussians by the French, the Frenchmen crossed the Wisl~a (Vistula) river against Russians who have formed an alliance with the Prussians. Then, during this war, wounded and ill French soldiers were transferred by the water through Torun (Thorn), Bydgoszcz (Bromberg) up to Nakl~o (Nakel) from that side of Wisla river in East Prussia, where in this time the French Emperor Napoleon I, called The Great, had his headquarters in Osterode and the last battle was at Prusisch Eylau on 8 of February 1807. The great numbers of wounded and ill soldiers were guided along the Notec river to a small military hospital in Szamocin (Samotschin). From here the dead were handed over to me, the local clergyman, to bury them in the proper Catholic way. I, myself had to go to visit the sick, because I know a little of French. Written for memory (Notari pro rei memoriam) Martinus Plucinski, 'curatus loci'

Parish record spelling of last name has changed over to Furmann in 1823 back in most records.
Furman Meaning:
The German surname Fuhrmann is of occupational origin, belonging to that category of names based on the type of work a person once did or the profession he once pursued. In this instance, the name can be traced to the Middle High German term "vuorman" which denoted a carter or carrier and which is itself a derivative of the Middle High German "vüeren"meaning "to lead or to transport". Other surnames which have evolved in a similar vein are Carter, Porter and Leader. The bearers of these names ware significant members of the community who were usually employed in the manor of the Nobility. As many manors were often owned by one Lord, it was necessary to have a Carter or Fuhrmann to transport produce from one place to another by awkward carts which ware usually two-wheeled affairs with high sides, drawn by two animals not necessarily horses. Variants of the surname Fuhrmann include Fuhrman, Furmann, Furman, Vormann, Fürer, Führ, Führmann, Führman, Fürmann, Fürman, and Formann, Forman.
