PETITION OF SUNDRY INHABITANTS OF DETROIT
page 238
To His Excellency Mr. Carleton, Governor of the Providence of Quebec and Dependencies &c.
My Lord , We, Citizens & Inhabitants of Detroit, seeing the publication made and posted up the 14th May of the present year in the name of Captain Turnbull, Commandant of this place, by which we have learned that His Majesty, by the advice of his Council has given an order to Mr. Macdougal to possess, cultivate and enjoy Hog Island, seeing at the same time a prohibition of my said Mr. Macdougal to the Public from bringing there any animals & the order to take away all those which may be there under pain of a fine &c.
Having the honor of representing to you the notable wrongs which the public would sustain by such a cession, if they can have the ground; His Majesty as well as his council cannot be informed of the right which we, inhabitants of the country have in this Island. We pray you very respectfully to consider that the Island in question is a common ceded to the public by the late M. de la Motte, first Commandant of the Country, to keep the cattle in safety, that this right lasted until now without having been chalenged, then that Mr. de Tonty since become Commandant undertook to appropriate it, but a request of the Public forced him immediately to abandon it. Mr. De Quindre under the order of Mr. de Celeron on account of his family & his personal merit obtained also the ownership; but the earnest representation the public deprived him of the possession.
Wherefore we faithful subjects of His Majesty earnestly pray Your Excellency to support & make good our rights and perogatives preserved to us by our former Sovereigns, in order that they be continued to us under the present Government, we pray you at the same time to consider how hard it would be for the ancient Inhabitants and faithful subjects of tits Majesty to see themselves stript of their rights and privileges in favour of a stranger come into this country.
We hope that in presenting our demands and supporting them with your credit we will obtain entire satisfaction on this subject & that the said Island will remain in common as it has been since the establishment of this Colony.
The Petitioners have the honor to assure your Excellency of the profound respect with which they are
Your very humble &c very obedient Servants
Detroit the 16th May 1769.
Charles Fontene
I the undersigned certify that the above contents also that the signatures are a true copy of the petition which the inhabitants of Detroit presented on the subject of Hog Island.
Detroit the 27th May 1769.

PETITION FOR MILL
To show how thoroughly the country here was under the control of the
military officers, the following is the substance of a petition of inhabitants
living at Petite Cote, on the south side of the river.
The petition is dated July 1, 1780, and sets forth that, for the public good,
it will be necessary to have a water mill built at that place to grind the grain
of the locality. They ask that Simon Drouillard be granted permission to build
a stone mill on the public domain. The petition is signed by John Bondy,
J. Pouget, Charles Reaume, Rene Cloutier, Theophile LeMay, Joseph Belleperche, Antoine Lafontaine, Baptiste Dufor, Antoine Cloutier, Jean Baptiste
LeBeau, Pierre Meloch, Pierre Pranez, J. B. Drouillard, J. B. Petre, George
Knaggs, Charles Renot, Charles Fontaine, J. B. Bonparre, J. B. Faignant,
August Peuparre, Francois Lesperance, Francois Proux, and Louis Rebeau.
Upon filing the above petition, the commandant, De Peyster, granted license
to Simon Drouillard to build a water mill on la riviere aux Dindes (Turkey
Creek).

Thursday, July 23, 1807.
The board met at 4 o'clock in the forenoon, pursuant to adjournment.
No. 44. FRANCOIS LAFONTIANE-The claim of Francois Lafontaine to three arpens, or French acres, in front, by forty in depth, which was entered in full length with the former commissioners of the land office at Detroit, in vol. 2d, page 95, under the date of the 8th of February, 1806, was taken into consideration; whereupon, Colonel Francis Chabert was brought forward as a witness in behalf of the claimant, who, being duly sworn, deposed and said, that, many years previous to the 1st of July, 1796, Ambroise Riopel was in possession and occupancy of the premises, and continued so until the 18th of July, 1799, when he sold the same to Messrs. Jacques and Francois Lasselle, who tenanted the same until the 30th of July, 1805, when they sold to the claimant, who, from that time to this day, has been in possession and occupancy.
And, thereupon, it doth appear to the commissioners that the claimant is entitled to the aforesaid tract of land, and that he have a certificate thereof, which certificate shall be No. 44; and that he cause the same to be surveyed, and a plot of the survey, with the quantity of land therin contained, to be returned to the register of the land office at Detroit.

Detroit the 27th May 1769.

living at Petite Cote, on the south side of the river.

Knaggs, Charles Renot, Charles Fontaine, J. B. Bonparre, J. B. Faignant,
August Peuparre, Francois Lesperance, Francois Proux, and Louis Rebeau.
Upon filing the above petition, the commandant, De Peyster, granted license
to Simon Drouillard to build a water mill on la riviere aux Dindes (Turkey
Creek).
