Biography of Pierre Durand-known as Demarchais 1638-1700 The first ancestor, PIERRE DURAND, were born and baptized on May 14, 1638, Paroisse St-Nicolas of Blois (France). His/her father carried also the first name of Pierre and, while being certain that this ancestor of News-France is the elder one, his/her father was born about 1615. His/her mother, Marie Chartier comes native of Blois (1612), from a marriage celebrated about 1634. Pierre was not alone to emigrate in News-France. According to what was brought back to us, two (2) others came from its district, three (3) of Poitiers-Angoulème, one (1) of Normandy and one (1) other of Paris, which belong to different families.
MILITARY PERIOD: Pierre had not completely reached his nineteenth year when it left the house of his father in the parish of Notre-Dame-des-Aides à Blois, in order to enrôll with the company of Arnould Loubia de Blois, one of the major units of the famous regiment of Carignan. This regiment had been distinguished previously with the battle from the Frontière de l'Est (precisely Turkey). In 1664, the King of France decided to establish in New-France a military defense of twelve hundred soldiers. This young army was under the command of the lieutenant-General Alexandre de Prouville de Tracy, which was mobilized in Quebec with the title of "Vice-Roi". We must note that Pierre, enrolled in Orleans at the end of the year 1664, just as its unit reached La Rochelle in the first days of 1665. They left La Rochelle in a boat between April and the end of May. Compagniesfurent attached in Quebec between the end of June and the beginning of September of the same year. We can now include/understand the dissension which has occurred between-them; this dissension was caused by an argument about the organization of the French West Indies, problem which has occurred in way. The last arrived boat on September 12, 1665, came directly from France and brought in the most rational Quebec of the administrators, Mr Jean Talon who became "Grand intendant" and, at the same time, Mr De Courcelles, which took authority with full powers at once that Mr De Tracy had supplemented his military operations. The regiment was sent in order to put an end to the aggression Iroquoise in civilized territory. Until its departure in 1667, Tracy diverted some infiltrations Iroquoises announcing some later attacks, by thinking however that it Malayan would persist. In 1667, a great number of officers and soldiers were approximate (recruitment), and the selected place was Quebec. A financial assistance of the crown, hundred (100) books, accompanied the offer (going up a little higher for the officers), for whoever wanted to become builder, and this was really a serious argument. Among the tumults, they could recruit four hundred (400) newcomers, which exceeded three (3) times in importance the "great recruitment of 1653". It is starting from this fact that the "Regiment of Carignan" was recognized.
With Benjamin Sulte, Irish historian, 1665 repeated the exploit achieved previously, namely that very reside of News-France, was better soldier than any European. He knew how to get dressed in order to overcome the coldness of the winter, he knew the Indian habits, and finally, could run with rackets. And moreover, with a small error, they recognized that the "Regiment of Carignan" was in fact only one event specific that the governors included/understood and applied an exceptional rule to it, single to the world. The inhabitants of Quebec organized their own militia and could elect their own officers. The officers of the large regiment perhaps were not initiated nor not tested about the particular conditions of North America, but had the duty to initiate the inhabitants with the military tactics like the erection of forts in strategic places, for example those of Sorel, Chambly, Contrecoeur, Verchères, etc. The ideology which animated them was: to go always further. At once that the captain of Loubia was elected Seigneur of Nicolet, located vis-a-vis at Three-Rivers, on the Bank-South, Pierre Durand was immediately under his orders in 1667. In the five (5) years which followed, it acquired a ground in the stronghold Hertel de Champlain and finally became farmer. His marriage with Jeanne-Renee Chartier was celebrated in Quebec on October 17, 1673, and the marriage contract between him and his future wife had passed under the seal of the Becquet notary the same day. With the census of 1681, we find Pierre Durand on a ground of thirty (30) acres and assets of three (3) cows. He had at this time 35 years, his wife 22 years and the alive brought back children were: Pierre, 7 years; Queen, 5 years; Jeanne, 3 years and Marie 9 months. Pierre Durand died on August 17, 1700, a date difficult to define for the researchers, since Pierre Durand was recorded under the nickname of "Pierre Desmarchets"; this nickname was brought by the army and its treaties. The researchers found certain contracts of Pierre Durand, signed between 1673 and 1700, the whole relating to grounds especially. None of these contracts knew to change its character of builder. This characteristic has been reflected on its descendants for 325 years.
