1851 Employee Payments Mackinac Agency

Kalamazoo Oct. 30 1851

Sir,

The following accounts of persons employed in the Mackinac Agency for services rendered the United States have been presented to me for payment. Viz.

Permit me to say that I have carefully examined the above mentioned accounts and during my recent visits to the various points in my Agency, to make annuity payments to the Indians. I have made enquiries in regard to them and also into the circumstances under which the services were rendered and that I am of the opinion that they are just and true and would therefore recommend that permission be given me by the Department to pay the same out of the appropriate funds (if sufficient) recently turned over to me by Mr. Babcock late Act. Supt. &c. a statement of which I have just received from the Department under date 10th inst.

It is proper also for me to state, that before the order of the Department was made suspending the payment of the accounts which accrued, before entering upon the duties of my office, I had already paid the following, which are embraced in the forgoing. viz:

From an examination of the statement of the funds turned over to me by Mr. Babcock, sent me by the Department, it appears that the amount applicable to the payment of Farmers and Assts. to the Ott. and Chipps. is only $704.92 while the accounts already rendered for that service during his term, make an aggregate of $814.13 leaving a balance of $109.21 unprovided for.

I am Dear Sir with great
Respect Your Obt. Servt.
