1853 Petition for Payment Ottawa Colony August Kalamazoo

Liighton (sic) Michigan March 14 1853

To the Hon. Superintendent of Indian Affairs. Washington.

Sir- There is due to us the money for our improvements and houses etc. purchased of us (at Grand crossed out) by the United States Government at Grand Rapids, Mich.

We have been trying to find where this money is. Our agent does not tell us anything about it; and we need the money to help ourselves on the place where we are now settled. We ask you to say to us through our Missionary whether there is any way that we can get our money. A part has been paid and we much want the rest. We understand the money has been paid into the hands of our agent. We wish to know how it is.

Written for the Indians of Ottawa Colony by E. H. Day, Missionary, to whom you will direct an answer, at Augusta, Kalamazoo Co., Michigan.
