Hamp Hunters

Notes

Edith Katherine HAMP

RESEARCH: Edith Katherine Hamp was born on 20 Jul 1889 in Gratiot County, Michigan. On 19 Sep 1908 she was married in Lansing, Ingham County, Michigan, to Benjamin Frank GILLETT, son of Alvin E. Gillett and Lydia STONE. Ben was born in Oct 1877 near Lansing or Eaton Rapids, Michigan. He was killed in 1929 in an auto accident near Kalamazoo, Michigan. At the time they lived on a farm near Vicksburg, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. Following Ben's death, Katie moved back to her parent's farm near Burlington, Michigan, until she remarried. Katie and Ben had one son but Katie also raised a daughter from Ben's previous marriage. Katie married second on 31 Oct 1930 to Lloyd E. Noble. He worked for Best Foods as a route salesman for many years. There were three grown children from his previous marriage which had ended in divorce. The youngest, still at home, was named Kenneth, as was Katie's son by her marriage to Ben, so for a while their household had two Kenneths. Katie and Lloyd always lived in the Kalamazoo, Michigan, area, finally retiring to a home in Galesburg, Michigan, a few miles east of Kalamazoo. Katie had much artistic ability and had dabbled in oils as a young woman and she also did some nice water colors later in life but really found her niche in rug hooking. Her "rugs" were intricate scenic views which were framed and hung as paintings on the walls. They are beautiful and cherished by all who own them. Lloyd assisted her with the cutting and dying of the material used. Another of Katie's accomplishments was the writing of a story about the wagon trip that her parents and family took from Michigan to Tennessee. She submitted it to "Reader's Digest" but they did not accept it for publication. Many of the family have copies though and the bit of family history which the story contained gave a starting place for this Hamp Hunter when embarking on this genealogy project. Katie died on 17 Jan 1972 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and is buried in Vicksburg, Michigan cemetery. Lloyd was born 12 Dec 1901 and died 26 Feb 1980.
