Family tradition says that Jacob headed West on foot to Idaho to seek his fortune in gold. He was noted in 1864 to have pledged $10 for a bounty of Pine River Township enlistees for the Civil War. Property Value $1,550 in 1883. Gratiot County Journal, Those Who Pay Tribute, (Ithaca, Michigan: Robert Smith, Editor & Proprietor, June 20, 1884) Bible is engraved with JACOB HOLMES on cover. It was published around 1890. Jacob was an early settler to Gratiot County. Jacob's father-in-law was Truman M. Crittenden, an early settler to Deerfield Twp, Mecosta County.

MISCELLANEOUS Jacob Holmes came to Gratiot Co, Mich. Oct 9th 1854 and settled on Section 9 Pine River when it was a wild woods, cut his road through the timber from Alma.
Ella (Crittenden) Gideon died Tuesday Feb 16th, 1909 at Clyde Park Montana in 39th year leaving 5/6 [written over] children and a husband.
