fact sources and writings about this individual:
Alfred Holmes came to Gratiot with Ralph Ely, founder of Alma, in 1854. His son Jacob Holmes came afterwards and settled in Section 9 east of the Parkinson settlement, one mile north of Forest Hill. A son of Jacob, Alfred Holmes, recalls spending many nights in the Parkinson brick house, the only remaining building of a once thriving settlement. Two old families came together when Alfred Holmes married Frances Fraer, a daughter of Frank Fraer. Frank Fraer served four years in the Civil War with a company of sharp- shooters. He located on 120 acres in Sections 13,14 and 24. After the war he became active in township affairs and served several years as highway commissioner. The Fraer farm is now in the names of twin great grandsons of Alfred Holmes, Sr., William and Truman Holmes, whose children are in the fifth Holmes Generation. (Gratiot County Herald 18 August 1955)

Alfred Holmes, a former resident on section 4, Pine River Township, now deceased, was a native of Pennsylvania. His parents were born in Virginia. Mr. Holmes was a pioneer of Gratiot county in 1855. He bought 320 acres of land, on which he resided and continued to improve until his death, which occurred January 9, 1876. He was married in Ohio of Catherine Beery. Mrs. Holmes is a native of the Buckeye State. Of six children born to her marriage to Mr. Holmes, four are living, Jacob, Nancy, Naomi and Ellen.
