-William F. was born in Kinross, Scotland and educated in Glasgow. -He enlisted in the British Service on 10 Dec 1816 in the Duke of Wellingotn's 33rd Regt. and served six years (Copy of service records). Deserted July 1822 in Jamaica. -Img. 04 July 1822 to Jamaica Island and that fall to New Brunswick. Then to Eastport, Maine for a short time. He settled in Columbiana county Ohio by 1823, where he engaged in the manufacturing of Wool and as a weaver. (source Chapman Bros Gratiot county History 1884) -17 Jan 1827 William married Catherine STICKELS, the daughter of Samuel STICKELS, a farmer. Her mother is not known. Catherine's birth was 12 July 1804 in Washington, Washington County PA. In 1854 William, Catherine and several of the children-Samuel, William Jr., Cassie (Cassandra), Mary, Lottie (?Laura) left Columbiana County Ohio for A Tree claim in Hamilton Township, Gratiot County MI. William Sr and Samuel were among the first settlers of Hamilton Township. Here he became a farmer. 

-By 1856 both were involved in the political life of Hamilton township. From the Gratiot County History of 1913 by Willard Tucker, we find that William served 5 terms as township supervisor, 2 terms as township clerk, 5 terms as school inspector, 6 terms as Justice of the Peace, 1 term as Treasurer, 1 term as Overseer of the Poor, and 1 term as highway commissioner. He held nearly constant public office from the time he came to the township until his death in 1888. 

-William and Catherine belonged to the Pioneer Society of Gratiot County. -With the beginning of the Civil War, William Jr. and Samuel both joined the recruits in North Star, MI. Samuel joined on 27 October 1863 to Company E, 2nd Calvary, and joined the regt at Sparta Tenn on 03 dec 1863, He was mustered out in Macon GA on 17 Aug 1865. (On his discharge papers Samuel is described as six feet, one inch tall, fair complexion, brown eyes and brown hair. {the man was a giant for his time}. 

-William enlisted in Co D, 26th inf on 12 Aug 1862 for 3 years, he was 20 years old. He was mustered on 15 Sept 1862 as a Corporal. Taken prisoner at Deep Bottom , VA on 16, Aug 1864. William died of disease (some say starved to death) in rebel prison in Salisbury, NC in the spring of 1865. His body lies in Southern soil but his marker is on the back of his parents stone in North Star township cemetery. This is the inscription- A kind and affectionate son and brother. A brave soldier. His life was given for his country and his body lies in southern soil, burial place unknown. -On 20th of June 1888, William, aged 90 years died at his daughter Cassie BARSTOW's home at South St Johns St, Ithaca MI. 

-On the 4th of Dec 1907, Catherine BARTON died at the age of 103 years. She was the oldest person in Gratiot County MI at the time.
