CAPTAIN'S
CABIN

This site is a part of the USGenWeb project and our home port is the Michigan USGenWeb project, although it will encompass "all" Great Lakes shipping areas that have shorelines that border the Great Lakes water system.

SEND A GL SHIP E-CARD

The Great Lakes waterways are a part of the earliest written history of this continent. Birch bark canoes were used by the explorers to find pathways inland from Canada and what is now the US and Western Canada.  These waterways today are still used to move products and people from the North East to the Mid West portion of the continent.  It is an efficient way to travel and send goods as our ancestors found out.

Many people have ancestors or a present family member who work on the Great Lakes in the shipping trade.  This site was developed to help you find records pertaining to their years of service to round out their history.  If you have material that you can donate to the site to help others please contact us.  Volunteers are always welcome and have donated much of the data on this site.

If you find this site helpful please recommend it to your shipping friends.

Homeport of Michigan Counties in MIGenWeb

The Michigan GenWeb Project

In March and April, 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Michigan GenWeb. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all Michigan counties, where collected databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index.

At the same time, volunteers were found who were willing to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page.

My name is , and I am the person responsible for Great Lakes Shipping Downward Bound genealogy site. If you would like to contribute your information to this page, please let me know.

If you would like to host a county, contact Jan Cortez .
