Location: Bailleul is a large town in France, near the Belgian border,14.5 kilometres south-west of Ieper and on the main roa d from St.Omerto Lille. From the Grand Place, take the Ieper r oad and 400 metresalongthis road is a sign indicating the dire ction of the cemetery. Turnrightinto a small road and follow f or approximately 400 metres. Thecemeteryis on the right and th e Communal Cemetery Extension is at thebottom end.


Historical Information: Bailleul was occupied on the 14th Octobe r 1914bythe 19th Brigade and the 4th Division. It became an im portantrailhead,air depot and hospital centre; the 2nd, 3rd, 8 th, 11th, 53rd,1stCanadian and 1st Australian Casualty Clearin g Stations werequartered init for considerable periods. It wa s a Corps Headquartersuntil July 1917,when it was severely bom bed and shelled; the burials inPlot III, Row Dof the Extensio n bear witness to the resultingcasualties. The Battle ofBaille ul, one of the Battles of the Lys, beganon the 13th and ended o nthe 15th April 1918. The town was defended bythe 29th, 31st , 34th and59th (North Midland) Divisions and the 4thGuards an d 147th Brigades, butit was entered by the Germans in theeveni ng of the 15th. Known as the "Glascow Greys", after the place where the Regimen twasfirst raised and from the fact that later adopted Grey fac ings totheiruniforms. Known as the "Die Hards". Assisted in qu elling theIndianMutiny. The 70th.was summoned from Calcutta i n 1861 to join forcesinNew Zealand. Stationed originally at Ot ahuhu, Auckland, withadetachment as far away as Dunedin durin g 1861-3. Soldiers oftheregiment saw action in Taranaki in 186 3 and in the Waikatoduring1863-4. Returning to Taranaki and th en across to Napier in 1865.Theyleft Auckland in January 186 6 for England. Unfortunately forthegenealogist very few of tho se who took their discharge in NewZealandhad their particular s entered in full in the Muster Rolls.

Then he travelled to Pukeokahu, Taihape, New Zealand.
In 1901 he settled in Utiku, Taihape, where he lived until his d eath,7July 1927 Taihape,
buried in the Taihape cemetery, (not Utiku) on the 9 July 1927 . 88yrs


John Doole joined the English Army in 1855 and served in the 70thRegiment in the Indian Mutiny, from 1857-58. He then came to N ewZealandto fight in the Maori Wars. After service in Taranak i and Waikatohe wasdischarged in Hawkes Bay. He tramped the ni nety mile bushthroughManawatu Gorge to Wanganui. Farmed at Wav erley, Fordell,Rikeokahu,(1899 - 1901) and Utiku (1901 - 1927)
In his latter years he went deaf.

These sections they won when the ballot was drawn in New Plymout h on15March, 1904, and they took up residence on 1 July, 1904 . To retaintheirlease they had to live on their allotted land . Elizabeth Old hadtowrite to the Commissioner of the Crown La nds in New Plymouth threetimesbefore she was granted an "Exemp tion of Residency" to live withherhusband on the next section.

John Barnes came out to New Zealand on the ship 'Gertrude', land ingatWellington.
John Barnes had a cartage business between Fordell and Wanganui ,besidesbeing a carpenter.
He built the homestead and much of the furniture.
Farmed 5 acres at Denlair (part of John Old's property) 1861-93,Mangamahu 1893-1907 (farming a pioneer block) Fordell.
Played the Concertina for dances.
John unfortunately fell from the dray in an accident and the whe el ofthedray went over his head. He lived, but was unable to w ork after that.

Lived at Plymstock with his widowed grandmother, Sarah Gould a t thetimeof the 1871 Census in which he is described as a scho lar aged 13years.
Arrived in New Zealand on October 25th, 1874 as an assisted immi grantonthe 'Douglas'. It was a memorable voyage on which 31 di ed.
John died on October 10th, 1907, in New Plymouth, disease of th eheart,in his 51st year, buried in the Te Henui cemetery.
