Superintendency of Indian Affairs Michilimackinac October 30, 1837

Sir,

Since closing my report on the claims for debt against the Indians, the L’Arbre Croche Chiefs have made a request, through on of their number, that George McGulpin Senior, of old, Mackinac, might receive five hundred dollars, out of the remaining fund. Stating as a reason for this allowance, that they are in the habit of stopping at his house, and always receive food and hospitable treatment at his hands, that he is a poor Man, with a large Family, and a relative of theirs, and that they think him justly entitled to it. McGulpin himself has presented no claims.

Had this request been made, previous to the close of the list, I should have felt it my duty to have inserted it, with the statement above made, and it is now due to that respectable Band of Indians to notice it. It appears to be a spontaneous movement, and the object which is known to me, is worthy.

I have the honor to be, Sir, Very respectfully Your obedient servant

Henry R. Schoolcraft

C. A. Harris Esq. Commissioner of Ind. Aff.

Denied October 30, 1837 as request came after List was closed.
