General Notes for Child Robert ROSS

From Sharie Argue
died of creeping paralysis disease. A farmer near Tait, Sask.

BIOGRAPHY: From Sharie Argue
Robert & Annie had four kids and $10.00 when they came from Elora, Ontario to Emerson, Manitoba. He was the overseer on a farm for a year or two, then moved to Gretna, Manitoba (on the U.S. border) and was in the draying business to the U.S.A. for a few years. William (Bill) was born there in Gretna bef.1892? Robert & Annie then bought a 1/4 section of land near Rosenfeld, Man. (14 miles North of Gretna). Bill started attending school here - bilingual school - German & English.
Had a farm near Rosenfeld, Manitoba. N.W. Sec. 10-twsp. 3-Range 1, E. of 1st M.
The Mennonite (German dialect) language was spoken in the school yard. Their house had a fireplace in the middle so each room got heat from the one source. The house was also attached to the barn when they got it, but Robert detached it and moved the barn to a nearby higher piece of ground. Robert Ross was with the Manitoba Provincial Police, involved in the search for then famous murderer, Krafshanko (1902?). Robert also drilled wells to support his family. He had a tripod well drilling machine....25 feet high with 20 foot stems and and auger. The horse walked inside the tripod to run the auger. When William was in grade four, the family moved to Govan. There was no school there for about 1 1/2- 2 years.

BIOGRAPHY: They farmed at Rosenfeld, Man. for a few years then sold out and moved to the District of Assiniboia (now Sask.) in 1904 to Govan, where Robert lived for the remainder of his life. He died in 1918. Then Annie moved back to Elora, Ontario until she died in 1935.

BIOGRAPHY: Robert Ross said "We're Highland, Lowland, & Aberdonian!"

BIOGRAPHY: Robert & Annie & family later homesteaded near Govan, Saskatchewan on S.E. 18-28-21 W. of 2nd. 8.5 miles N.E. of Govan. The barn was built by Robert Ross approximately 1909-1910. The house was built in 1914. Both have stone foundations and are still standing. A family by the name of Watkins now live on this farm. Jean Ross owned the property still. The closest little town was Tate, Saskatchewan. Railroad went through here in 1909. Now a ghost town. Have a spike from the old railroad. Also a picture of Paul Argue as a little boy at the Tate Post Office.
