from Memorial Pres. Church old record books [retrieved Aug 2001]:

Ellen and Samuel Auger joined the church Oct. 21, 1900 by letter; noted as living at 2410 Fitzhugh. Samuel Auger, ordained as an elder Nov. 1900; re-elected 1903; ordained as a Deacon Nov. 1906 and served until 1909.

There is another notation of Auger, Samuel Sr. and Auger, Samuel Mrs., admitted May 24, 1914 by letter.

Did Sam and Ellen formally leave the congregation and move to Saginaw for a while? They are in Saginaw for the 1910 census. Then readmitted to the church upon return in 1914?

Death records in the Memorial Pres. Church:

Auger, Wm. S. 211 S. Jackson died 9/6/1919 "an old Church member"
Auger, Mrs. Wm. S. Sr., died 8.4.1923 "a very faithful member"

There is a stained glass window in the Memorial Presbyterian Church in memory of Samuel and Ellen Auger.

The book, "Burials of Bay City, Michigan" found in the Bay County Historical Society's Butterfield Memorial Research Library, lists Auger, Samuel, buried 9 September 1919, lot 233B. We couldn't find any marker there in Aug 2001.

General Notes for Child Gertrude AUGER

NOTES: from Joyce Heide
My mother and my great-aunt Irene both remember Aunt Gert. She was the one who took care of Grandma Auger (Hellen Allan) until shortly before she died.

Gertrude was known for getting words wrong, and one of the stories that the family remembers is when Aunt Gert was a young woman and somewhere she heard the word castrate and asked her mother what it meant. Her mother, not wanting her genteel daughter to discuss the matter, told her it meant "to cut."
Sometime after that, at a family dinner where there was a roast duck, Aunt Gert asked who wanted to "castrate" the duck. Pretty funny, eh?

General Notes for Child William Henry (Harry) AUGER

Most of the information, especially on Mary Dunn and all her children & dates are from typed "Family Tree of Samuel N. Auger & Ellen Allen (sic)", given to Ruth Auger circa 1978, probaby made by one of William Henry's family members.

1902-1903 Bay City Directory:
Auger, Harry, laborer, 2422 Fitzhugh

1904 Bay City Directory
Auger, William H., electrician, King Electric, 320 Stanton

It looks like Wm. Henry married his second wife in Ontario and the children by that marriage were all born there.

CRO states: I think he was in the Veterans Hospital in Battle Creek, MI. Perhaps died there. Babe [youngest daughter; mother died when she was 9] used to stay with Aunt Nell and Uncle Bert a lot of the time. My parents and Gord and Leona [Auger] were good friends with Mary and used to visit them, I think in Toronto.
