BIOGRAPHY: SHORT SKETCHES OF GILPIN COUNTY PIONEERS AND OTHER EARLY DAY STORIES.
From the WEEKLY REGISTER CALL OF 24 th. MAY 1940

BIOGRAPHY: WM. AUGER SOME REFLECTIONS

BIOGRAPHY: I was born in St. Teath, North Cornwall, England on the 29th. September 1856, one of twelve children, three older than me and eight younger.

BIOGRAPHY: My Father was a carpenter and millwright, as his forefathers were before him for generations. My Mother's folk were business people.

BIOGRAPHY: Because of a large family, I went to work with very little schooling. One of my uncles was a farmer and I stayed with him a large part of the time. There were three daughters in the family, but no son and I was a welcome addition.

BIOGRAPHY: At the age of fourteen, I went to live with a Mr. Basset, who owned a hotel and butcher shop. My job was to look after the garden, deliver meat and do the hostler's work. I lived with them for two years.

BIOGRAPHY: After this time I went home to work in the old Treburget mine; my first experience in mining. While working in the mine I had a chance to help in the blacksmith shop, which delighted me as I had always wanted to be a blacksmith. After a year as a helper I was given a forge, sharpening steel and doing other blacksmith work. In 1876 the mine closed down but I got a job in the village blacksmith shop where I worked about two years.

BIOGRAPHY: At this time I received an offer to go Wales to take charge of a mine blacksmith shop. I arrived there in the early months of 1879 and worked for about two months when the main pumping bob broke and they closed down the mine.

BIOGRAPHY: I was out of work again and so was Jack Pengelly, who was well known to Gilpin county people in the 80's. He was one of the wrestlers and sports of Mountain City. We met a man who had been to this country and was home on a visit. He was going back to the copper mines in North Michigan. We told him that we had always wanted to go to America and would like to go back with him. He said, "1 would be pleased to have your company." So we travelled together until we reached Hancock, Michigan. The others being hard rock miners received a contract sinking a shaft. I did not stay long at that as I received a job as foreman blacksmith at the Hancock mine, under the management of Captain John Ryan. He was a wonderftil man. His son, for whom I used to make hoops, became chief of the United States plane production in the World war.

BIOGRAPHY: On June 1st., 1881, Jack Pengelly and I decided to come to Colorado. We arrived in Central City June 5th. Nick Sams, the hack driver for Dick Williams, took us to Mountain City to the home of Wm. Short, across the street from the firehouse. They were friends of Jack's. We stayed with them two or three days. Having arrived on a Sunday, I went to the Methodist church and heard the Rev. Matthew Evans preach on the text, "We All Do Fade as the Leaf" He was a good preacher.

BIOGRAPHY: On Monday I visited the blacksmith shops in Central trying to get a job, but was unsuccessfiil. Being near noon I started down toward the house where we were staying and a strange thing happened. A man on horseback called to me and asked if I was a blacksmith? I said I was and also a drill sharpener. He said you are the man I am looking for. His name was Martin Pitts. He and a Mr. Burke had a grading contract about two miles below Rollinsville on the railroad which later became the Moffat. I took the job and my helper was Sam Doran, a boy
about 16 years of age, a very likeable chap. The friendship we formed there was never broken until his death. There were a number of miners who came out there to work as they paid a better wage than in the mines. Jack Pengelly came with them.

BIOGRAPHY: After a while Jack and I decided that railroad construction was too rough a life for us so we quit and went to the Blue Bird mine, two miles north of Nederland and got work there.

BIOGRAPHY: The next year 1882, I asked my boyhood sweetheart if she would come to this country and join me in marriage. I had not seen her for five years as she went to London quite a while before I came to this country; all of our courting was done by mail during that time. She was brave enough to cross the big pool and arrived in Boulder August 12th., 1882. We were married on the 14th. By the Rev. Gillam, the Methodist minister of Boulder. We left that afternoon for the Blue Bird mine, hiring a team with driver. What a change from the city of London to
Boulder canyon. But my wife was thrilled with the scenery.

BIOGRAPHY: I was put in charge of the mine and we got along nicely. On July 24th., l883, my wife presented me with our first son.

BIOGRAPHY: About the 20yh., September, 1883, we left the Blue Bird mine and went to Birmingham, Alabama. I secured blacksmith work at the Pratt Coal and Coke mine and we were getting along fine until our baby was taken sick. After the Doctor attended him for quite a while he told us if we wanted to save our baby we must take him away from that climate. Not knowing of a better climate than that of Colorado we came back to Central City, arriving a few days before his first birthday, 1884. We got Dr. Davidson to attend to him. He improved for a while but on September 28Th.passed away from us to him who took little children up in His arms and blessed them while He was on earth.

BIOGRAPHY: At this time I was working for Matt Bollart and Wm. Fick in Black Hawk in their blacksmith and wagon shop. John Morgan, Evan Morgan's father, and I worked together. He was a very fine blacksmith and a good friend of mine. I shall never forget his kindness when our baby died. He was like a father to me.

BIOGRAPHY: Gilpin county was very lively during this period, a large number of mines were being worked and the quartz haulers were busy hauling the ore to the mills in Black Hawk. The streets of Central were kept alive with these horse and mule teams hauling quartz and supplies
through them.

BIOGRAPHY: The Prize mine was employing a large number of men. Joseph Bostwick, the superintendent, asked me to take the job of blacksmith for him, which I did and stayed there four years and at the California, Hidden Treasure and Kansa's mines I worked eight years more. The weather seemed very severe during the winter months and many mornings as we traveled from Central City up to the mines we would have to lie flat on the ground and grasp boulders to keep from blowing off our path. In the 80's and later we had several cloudbursts. I remember one that came down Eureka street that carried wood sidewalks and other debris down to Mountain City and piled it on the roof of the Buell mill and in front of McFarlane's foundry the water washed the street out some eight feet deep.

BIOGRAPHY: In the fall of 1901 the Cashier Gold Mining and Reduction company bought the Pittsburg group of mines in Russell Gulch. I was employed by them as underground foreman, working under the orders of the superintendent, the method of quantity production being employed, which has closed down many good mines in Gilpin county. In 1905 a new president and board of directors took charge. They asked me if I could make the mine pay if I had full charge. I said I thought the mine could be made to pay alright, so they gave me the
responsibility. Gilpin county people know the result. It soon became one of the best dividend paying mines in the county and continued so for years. While working the mine we took out almost eight hundred thousand dollars worth of ore from Pittsburg and Golden Wedge mines.

BIOGRAPHY: As a family we lived in Central City 37 years; seven of our children were born there. My wife and I joined the St. James Methodist church March 7, 1887. The Rev.T.L.Wiltse was the pastor. Under his ministry there were 133 conversions in 1886 and 1887. At that time there were no electric lights, pipe organ, or heating plant in the church. The present pews were also put in later as was the carpet. On March 7th., 1887, I was appointed Class Leader and continued until 1921. My wife was also a worker in the church, not- withstanding our big family.
Being Methodists we believed in family prayer. Our children, as soon as they were able to read, had a bible given to them so they could read each night at the family altar. We therefore obeyed the scriptural injunction train up a child in the way he should go, so that when he is old he will not depart from it. My helpmate went to her reward six years ago last October. There are not many of the old timers from Gilpin county left but wherever you are you are still friends and I hope to meet you in the Home Land. "All the way my Saviour leads me, What have I
to ask besides, Can 1 doubt his tender mercy, Who thru life, has been my guide, Heavenly peace, divinest comfort, Here by faith in Thee I dwell, For I know what'ere befalls me, Jesus doeth all things well."

BIOGRAPHY: While the foregoing covers in brief an outline of my life to the time of leaving Gilpin county, it might be of some interest to touch on a few highlights.

BIOGRAPHY: The year 1907 stands out in memory as a time of trial and loss, as that summer marked the passing of our 16 year old son with typhoid fever. At the same time two daughters were very ill with the same disease at St. Luke's hospital in Denver. The comforting thought now is the way our pastor, Dr. Forrester, and friends rallied to us- so typical of the spirit manifested in a small community.

BIOGRAPHY: My heart began troubling me in 1912 and we were advised that a change of altitude might prove beneficial, so Mrs. Auger and I spent some time in Greeley. This did prove temporarily beneficial, but in 1913 our doctor thought I should get down to sea level for a while. In May 1913 therefore Mrs. Auger and I left for England, where we sojoumed for about two months. This trip did me a world of good and was much enjoyed. It was 34 years since I had seen my mother and the memory of the reunion with her, together with other relatives and old
friends will stay with me always. My father had passed away a few years prior to our visit to the old home land. One of the cherished memories in connection with our trip to England is the sending off the boys at the Pittsburg mine gave me on the eve of our departure. I was leaving the
building and was struck with the fact that none of them had wished me a pleasant joumey but lo, and behold, when we got outside here were all the employees lined up. I asked them if they were going on a strike. I shall never forget John Oliver, who acted as spokesman for the group, as he came forward and presented me with a beautiful ring made of Gilpin county gold by Mr. Rapin, the jeweler. I was as deeply moved as Mr. Oliver, and found it difficult to express myself in appreciation of the men's loyalty and thoughtftilness.

BIOGRAPHY: While I am on the subject of the Pittsburg mine I like to remember that never a superintendent had more loyal and efficient workmen. The accident record is another source of great satisfaction to me. In all the years we only had two minor accidents.

BIOGRAPHY: It is also pleasant to recall the confidence reposed in me by the stockholders and board of directors. Practically all of whom lived in the East and very seldom even visited the mine. They seemed to have complete confidence in the management and never once was there a reprimand or criticism of any nature whatsoever.

BIOGRAPHY: Another pleasant memory is that twice a month as regular as clockwork every man was paid in full and all company bills were settled each month in full without fail. No doubt some of the former employees will remember the turkeys given each and every one at Thanksgiving or Christmas.

BIOGRAPHY: As I look back on our years in Central City it pleases me to think that our friends were not confined to the Methodist church, although they were especially near to us. Still some of our best friends were of other races and religious faiths. I particularly remember Father Meyer visiting the girls when they were so ill at the hospital, and the pleasant relations we enjoyed with Father Naughton and other priests.

BIOGRAPHY: I stated many limes that there were three places in Central where I could be found- the mine, the church and my home. I do recall now with some pleasure that I was invited to be a candidate for mayor, which I rejected but felt honored none the less.

BIOGRAPHY: In conclusion I want to say that I look back on the years in Central with a great deal of pleasure. If I went into all the memories I could write a book. I have tried to mention those things that might be of interest to the old timers that are left.

BIOGRAPHY: As to my present condition, I am glad to say that in my sunset years I am surrounded with my family and unlike most families we are within an hour's drive of each other and see one another regularly. There are six children, nine grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren. We are quite a crowd.

BIOGRAPHY: Last November I became very sick and for four months was confined to my bed and at times very close to death's door. At the present time I am convalescing nicely and the doctor tells me that if I am careful I should live at least ten more years.

BIOGRAPHY: My entire attitude and conduct has been guided by Micah 6:8,"And what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God."
